The ACTION/CRIME/THRILLER SEPTEMBER 2017 FEEDBACK Film Festival was truly a great success.

The theme of the festival was “WHAT’S NOT SEEN”.

Every film showcased was about a protagonist or antagonist who is there but never seen.

NOTE: This was a showcase of the best ACTION/CRIME/THRILLER films from around the world.

This was an amazing night of watching films and then having an insightful conversation about the films and storytelling itself. This was easily one of the best audiences we had this year. The discussion was smart, and on point. Cheers to the city of Toronto.

We showcased seven films from the UK, United States, and Canada that all played to rave reviews. Every single film received a vote for best film of the night.

These are the types of genres that just don’t receive enough attention on on the film festival curcuit, especially short films. SUSPENSE is the key word. As an audience, to stay engaged, we simply need to know what’s going to happen next – while wanting to be surprised by it too. All of these films succeeded tremendously. There is an immense wealth of talent who worked on these shorts.

See you at the festivals in 2017.

The HORROR/THRILLER APRIL 2017 FEEDBACK Film Festival gave our audiences simply the best of short comedy movies from around the world.

The theme of the festival was “ENTRAPMENT”.

Every film showcased was about a situation where the world was closing in on the characters.

The Horror/Thriller Festival is definitely a shift in tone in comparison to all of the other events we do. It’s a whole new crowd that shows up, as some of our regular attendees chose to skip the scary film night.

So the moderation Q&A with the audience is vastly different than the rest. Our resident “Horror/Thriller” moderator Amanda Lomonaco has a tough job – but she’s a fan first and LOVES this genre. Horror fans can get to the point quick and fast on their opinions of the films showcased.

There is the sense of ownership that goes on with the fans of horror. They are giving a piece of their lives (a major hobby) to this genre and in exchange they demand high quality in return. This is also true for the hardcore sports fan, wrestling fan, and comic book fan.

I can stack this lineup of terrific horror/thriller short films that we showcased at the April 2017 Festival with any other festival and short film lineup out there. These were 7 amazing shorts that the audience really loved. Just watch the feedback videos and hear what the crowd had to say about them.

Two more Horror/Thriller Festivals to come in 2017.

See you at the festivals.

Directed by Jake Gutwillig

A boy stuck in a storm shelter with his parents must question their reality, and find a way to leave to find the truth of the world outside.

Director’s Statement:

‘Sheltered’ is about trust, and the honesty shared from one generation to another. There’s a lot more as well going on, but the core I wanted to explore was finding the balance of truths in what we see compare to what we hear, and the importance of self discovery.

Audience Feedback Video: KONG’s, 10min, USA, Crime/Thriller

AUDIENCE FEEDBACK VIDEO from the April 2017 Film Festival:

  MOVIE POSTERKONG’s, 10min, USA, Crime/Thriller
Directed by Ian Schiller

When a low criminal makes his move against an old friend, it thrusts him into the deep end of a criminal world where his next move could be his last.

Director’s Statement:

I live in Santa Cruz Ca, a town where the tech billions of the Silicon Valley is held at bay by a redwood forest and a winding road through the mountains. It’s a town where vacationers and day trippers brave the pass to enjoy it’s beaches and millionaires overbid themselves to buy beachfront property.

However, beneath this sunny veneer lies a shadow culture, people living outside the margins of society. Transients forced on busses to Santa Cruz from less accommodating locals. Lurkers existing as they have and will – skating, surfing, partying, living for the next swell. Living by the money of random jobs and petty crime. Kong’s is a Neo Noir inspired story about one such criminal who makes a desperate move in an attempt to escape his status.

My location, Kong’s exists in real life. It’s is a dingy seedy convenience store in a gentrified community. A convenience store wearing the patina of the early nineties where the rich and street punks alike come for their beer and late night ice cream. It was here I realized I wanted to explore the intersection of Santa Cruz’s two worlds and investigate the darkness just underneath the surface.

In writing the story, the original concept was to place the film in one moment of time. To see events unfold nearly in real-time yet deliver a complete three act story within the confines of a short. Moreover to create a story starting at a high point of tension and each subsequent character adding to the tension.

In many ways I’m an outsider in my own town and I’ve always been fascinated by the characters I come across. Kong’s and the characters in the story, while fictional, embody the unseen strata of Santa Cruz. One where most turn a blind eye and are secure to think does not exist.
